The Essence of Essence

Ancient Text

“Life is a sacred adventure. Every day we encounter signs that point to the active presence of Spirit in the world around us. Spiritual literacy is the ability to read the signs written in the texts of our own experiences . . . . Spiritual literacy is practiced in all the world’s wisdom traditions. Medieval Catholic monks called it ‘reading the book of the world’” (Spiritual Literacy: Reading the Sacred in Everyday Life by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, p.15).

In my early twenties I had a dream of a large, ancient tome titled The Essence of Essence. My task was to read it and live it. Reflecting on my life, I believe thus far I have lived the essence of this book of wisdom. To some this may sound egocentric; however, I believe it is each of our tasks to live this wisdom—remembered dream or not. Each of us has a specific calling that is sacred and only we can actualize this calling—specifically and in its entirety.

The Calling to Write

While “reading the book of the world” it is important to discover the unwritten books inside you that you need to give to the world. To give freely of your spiritually distilled essence—an essence purified by the fiery steam of life’s adversity—is the most cherished gift you can give the world. Your next book that you are to write awaits you as a baby waiting to be born. Let each of your books be born at the right (write) time.
