Balancing Motherhood and Writing

Motherhood has always been a balancing act, and it’s probably more of one now than ever. The Internet, blogging, and social media have added a whole new dimension to the demands many mothers face.

And it often isn’t simply a matter of choice. Many women feel called to blog or write in general. I talk more about the calling to write in this post: Blogging for God.

If you feel called to write, write as a business, or feel rejuvenated by writing, you’ll find helpful ideas in these posts by Jody Hedlund, a homeschool mother of five who actually wrote four full-length novels in five years:

6 Ways to Make More Time for Blogging & Writing While Homeschooling, a guest post by Jody Hedlund at Simple Homeschool

8 Reasons Not to Quit Social Media When You’re Burned Out from Jody Hedlund.

But you’ll notice that even Jody says:

“Don’t get me wrong. We all need vacations from social media on occasion. I usually take a couple breaks during the year. It’s good for us and our families for us to unplug. And sometimes we have to evaluate our schedules and cut back the time we’re spending on social media—especially if it becomes more consuming than our actual writing.”

And that’s where I think we each need to look at our calling, our own unique balance. I wrote quite a bit for a few years, including writing a number of articles and a children’s book. Then I felt called to homeschool and follow my children’s interests for a number of years. Later, when my children were in college, I was called back to writing – first as a master’s student and then as a blogger and eBook writer. Writing is a regular part of my day now.

So don’t worry if your balance is different from another mother’s. Don’t worry if your writing comes in starts and stops. Allow yourself to listen to your own balance and unique calling, enjoy your family, and flow with each phase of your life.
