The Christian Writer: Cutting through Illusion“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household” (Matthew 10:34-36, KJV).

As a writer, you need to excise societal opinions before they influence your writing style, cutting them out before they choose the words you use, before expectations mold your sentences, before you can’t recognize your own writing. Jesus demands that you become an individual, separating yourself from the herd, bringing a sword of discernment to separate fiction from the truth, enabling the truth to set you free.

Group-Think

Group-think is like glue; it sticks to your every thought, keeping originality at bay, creating a patchwork prison of hardened-glued beliefs. Opinions from popular movies influence your thinking; opinions from popular books influence your thinking. Colleges and universities tell you what to think, what to read, what to watch.

Pruning

But Jesus brings a sword, pruning dead branches (old attitudes) from the tree of life, slicing through collective attitudes hiding in the brush—making way for new life. Pointing to heaven with His shining sword, Jesus shows us where inspirational, meaningful spiritual thoughts originate.

Pollination

Imagine these thoughts like seeds raining down, pollinating the earth with divine illumination, replacing current collective thinking, bringing wisdom, compassion and truth. And when you have quality thoughts to write about, your words can spread healing throughout the world.

Pruning is something we all need in our lives. We should let the Lord cut through our negative thoughts, low attitudes and our habit of hanging on to failure!

Thanks for sharing these insights Terry.
