Dream a New Dream

Butterfly: Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore)

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis

I love that C.S. Lewis quote. It reminds me that there’s always something new to focus on, a new goal to set, no matter what age we are.

I could never fully subscribe to the “If you can dream it, you can do it” philosophy because it simply defies logic too much for me. I do believe that you can do amazing things at any age if your dream is in tune with God’s dream for you.

Of course, I can never be on American Idol. (Not only don’t I meet the age requirements, but I don’t have a singing voice that’s even close to qualifying.) But I’m happy in knowing that God didn’t call me to be a singer except for my own happiness and when I’ve shared songs with children. There are dreams I can embrace that will embrace me as well.

My husband, Terry, and I saw the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel last night and found it to be a great example of C.S. Lewis’ quote. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about a group of British retirees who go to India, where it’s less expensive, with hopes of an exotic life at the Marigold Hotel. Here’s the movie trailer if you haven’t seen it already:

Terry and I weren’t really impressed with the movie trailer, even though the movie has an amazing cast with Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, and Dev Patel. But we decided to see the movie based on Roger Ebert’s review: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (PG-13). We loved the movie! Some may consider the movie to be clichéd, but if you allow yourself to be moved by the film, it’s enchanting. You’ll find it both funny and inspiring.

Many movies today leave me feeling unsatisfied, but this movie was very touching and satisfying. And the movie isn’t just about retirees. Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire was funny and inspiringly energetic in his role as a young man with a dream “to create a home for the elderly so wonderful that they will simply refuse to die.”

You’ll even find Judi Dench playing a new blogger in the movie! When I think of how many of us are called to blog and/or write in another way, I’m even more impressed with the movie. It definitely reminds us that we are “never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on “dreaming a new dream”. After God called my husband home 5 years ago, He first healed my heart and then He placed a new dream there. A little over two years ago I remarried and began a whole new life that encompasses that dream. Life is full of exciting possibilities if we only trust God to bring to fruition the dream He has planted.

I love the C. S. Lewis quote. I wrote it on my dream page in my journal. I think when I quit dreaming is when I’ll die. This is such an encouraging post to me. I love the rainbow picture, too.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Pamela. Your statement about dreaming reminds me of a Langston Hughes quote that I love: “Hold fast to your dreams, for without them life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.”
