Psalms and Creative Writing: Cleansing Love

When evil pollutes
the soul,
wrap me in a cape,
whiter than snow,
where sin cannot enter.

When evil pollutes
the earth,
make my heart
a pure stream
in the desert.

When evil
is vanquished,
your love like
fresh rain
washes us clean.
–Terry Chitwood

My verses were inspired by parts of Psalm 51. Evil seeps into our lives through the tiniest crevices: an unintended sarcastic remark, a diminishing gesture, or an unreturned telephone call. Evil feeds on hurt feelings, increasing the pain by needling the mind with negative thoughts. After bombarding the mind, evil will attempt to penetrate the soul.

Spiritual Battle

Guarding the soul through purity isn’t always enough. Purity can protect the soul from evil; however it’s not designed to be used to actively fight evil . . . to get into the trenches with it. Jesus said, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword” (Matthew 10: 34, KJV). Jesus believes in fighting the spiritual battle.

Love

Jesus also believes in the power of love as a force of active goodness in the world. He modeled this principle through His ministry during His earthly life as well as teaching it. Love cannot be defeated by evil; therefore love will prevail.
