These verses were inspired by parts of Psalm 131. Hubris destroys the inner world, eroding compassion and other values of the heart. The intellect becomes a god, pursuing power not prayer, self-glorification not praise, and manipulation not cooperation. To pretend to be a god exceeds even the sin of pride.
Thunderbolts
Hubris can be followed by punishment, which restores order and ends the threat of chaos. In Greek mythology, Zeus used a thunderbolt as a weapon for punishment, transporting Ixion via thunderbolt to the underworld where Ixion is bound to a spinning, fiery wheel for eternity. Also, Zeus struck down Salmoneus with a thunderbolt. His offense? Salmoneus claimed he was Zeus.
Right Relationship
At times, God can be kinder than Zeus, hitting us with a bolt of lightning at the first signs of hubris, abruptly opening our minds to the fact God is in control. Suddenly, we are in right relationship to God. We are His servants.
