Psalms and Creative Writing: The Lord Roars

The Lord roars,
thunder across
the water.

The Lord’s tongue,
a flame of lightening,
a sword splitting the sky.

The Lord roars,
shaking the desert,
quaking the earth.
–Terry Chitwood

My poem is based on Psalm 29 which portrays the voice of the Lord as a powerful storm. C.S. Lewis portrays God as a lion who roars in The Chronicles of Narnia. The Lord’s voice is a mighty wind that blows words onto and across the page, revealing His will for His people.

Voice

Writing that flames across the page, burning its message into our brains, is like the voice of the Lord. Writing that destroys our illusions, tears the veil apart and reveals a new sun. Writing that shakes our worldviews apart, leaves us quivering in the new dawn.

Whirlwind

We meet the whirlwind in the deep wood, where it spins out its secrets, wrapping us in golden thread, weaving us into light. We meet the whirlwind on the mountain where a shrill wind screams into our ears the oath we took in heaven before we were born—a reminder of our calling. We meet the whirlwind on the water, telling us to be fishers of men . . . and women.
